Updating Your Old Pool Equipment Can Save You Money

Older pools, 15 years or older, may be still running on single speed pool pumps, old pool equipment, inefficient pool and spa heaters, or old halogen pool lights.  All these inefficiencies can add to your monthly power bill.  Instead of spending money on pool repair for older equipment, it can pay to upgrade and invest in more efficient pool equipment.

In this article we detail three upgrades you can make to your pool equipment to help prevent costly pool equipment repair that is inevitable for older pools.  Updating your equipment will give you a new manufacturer’s warranty that may be able to be extended through your installer.  Also, recent innovations allow the equipment to be more energy efficient.

Upgrade your pool heater.

There are many efficient pool heaters available on the market.  Heaters that run on natural gas or propane are popular because they can heat larger pools and spas fast.  They offer high BTU which can rapidly heat your pool.  These heaters can boast an above 80% efficiency rating as well as low exhaust emissions.

For smaller pools, heat pumps that run on electricity are an option, especially in the warmer climate of Central Florida.  Typically, these pool heaters generate 55K BTU’s vs up to 200+ for a large gas heater.

You’ve heard of how tankless water heaters for homes are all the rage.  Well now, you can get a tankless water heater for your pool and spa.  Some of the larger units can produce up to 100K BTU’s.  The tankless water heaters also have an extremely small footprint and are mounted indoors away from the elements on an interior wall.

Updating your old pool heater to one of these efficient models can save you money in the long run and prevent those pool heater repairs!

Go with a Variable Speed (VS) Pump.

Pool pumps are the one of the largest consumers of energy in your home. Matter of fact, Federal mandates are phasing out the old one speed pumps for the VS pumps.  VS pumps spin the motor at lower speeds saving a huge amount of electricity.  Moreover, VS pumps are programmable for your unique pool set up.  Another advantage is that these pumps are immensely quieter and offer whisper quiet operation.  VS pumps, since they operate at lower motor speeds, are also more efficient at water filtration.  As you can see there are many advantages to a VS pump.  Make sure you use a certified swimming pool electrician for the installation.

Time to switch from Halogen to LED lighting.

You are familiar with the switch from halogen or fluorescent lighting in the home to LED.  Well, similarly, LED pool lighting can last 10 time as long and use less that 80% less energy than halogen.  Typical halogen pool lighting lasts 1500 to 3000 hours whereas LED pool lighting lasts 30K – 50K hours!  Also, pool LED light fixtures are compatible with pool automation systems.
