There’s nothing quite like the look of a pristine pool. With a smooth and perfectly clean surface, bright tiles, a perfect water level, and crystal blue water; it’s the picture-perfect image of summer, relaxation, and family fun. However, have you ever seen a more dilapidated pool? One with stains, leaks, cracks, or low water level? These are the signs of a neglected pool that likely needs to be resurfaced. But what exactly is pool resurfacing? And Is it necessary? The answer is a resounding “yes!”. It’s an expense that comes along with pool ownership that is required in order to keep your pool aesthetically pleasing and functionally enjoyable. The pool resurfacing cost shouldn’t cost you an arm and a leg but can be much more costly if done incorrectly.
Pool resurfacing companies should have your best interest at heart and not the biggest paycheck, as we do. With that in mind, here are three MAJOR mistakes we want to save you from making when resurfacing your pool.
1. Removing old concrete
While old concrete can be a bit of an eyesore at times or seem to be beyond repair, removing it can be extremely costly, and should only ever be done unless there is a threat to the structural integrity of your pool – such as a sinkhole. Otherwise, it’s best to keep in mind one simple fact about removing your old concrete pool floor; you will never recoup your costs. The value of your home/pool won’t increase, and you won’t have any significant benefits from replacing it. In other words, never relay concrete when you can just utilize concrete overlay instead. Concrete pool resurfacing can involve a pool resurfacing contractor applying an overlay that consists of things like cement, polymers, resins, and other additives that will function as another layer on your pool floor. This is also commonly used in pool leak repairs.
2. Installing natural stone
This is another sunk cost that homeowners often incur when undergoing pool renovation. While natural stone is indeed beautiful, the cost of natural stone is not matched by its value. Resurfacing existing concrete with a polymer-modified overlay is a much better option that can even mimic the look of natural stone. In addition, natural stone takes regular and complex upkeep to reduce porosity and maintain the initial look. So while those travertine pavers may look nice and feel cool under your feet, when looking into your pool refinishing options you’ll want to stay away from porous natural stones that will be vulnerable to stains, cracks, leaks, and erosion over time.
3. Forgetting about drainage
An easily overlooked factor of a healthy pool deck is a proper drainage system. In order to keep a pool deck functional and visually appealing, a proper drainage system is absolutely necessary. Without this, still, water is left on the deck and can cause corrosion, rot, and discoloration, not to mention adding a safety hazard (by increasing the risk of slips and falls)! It will also allow dirty water to enter the pool regularly posing more safety hazards by introducing more harmful bacteria and debris and causing your filter to work over time.
These are just some of the costly mistakes we’ve seen pool owners make when undergoing their pool remodel over the years. When you’re a homeowner lucky enough to have a pool, it’s important to consider your pool care as important as grooming yourself or your dog. It’s simply a must in order to ensure the longevity and quality of life of your pool. Think of it as pool hygiene!
